We're all familiar with the phrase, "If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life."
While well-intentioned, it's untrue. Worse, it leaves many confused when the spark seems to die.
There will be days where you may love what you do, but you don’t like what you do.
There will be days when what you do will feel monotonous, where the passion you once had for clients and the bigger picture isn’t marked by boundless energy but a long sigh.
There will be days where work will feel very much like work. The danger of believing the quote above is that work feeling like work will tempt you to believe you’ve outlived your calling.
Not feeling the big feelings every single day doesn’t mean you’re no longer on the right path. If something needs to change – such as reprioritizing your schedule to allow for margin, or reevaluating whether or not the clients you’re getting are the ones you want to target, or attending a conference to recharge your batteries – change it.
Just don’t throw in the towel too soon in chase of a mythical daily fire that never needs to be stoked.
